Muskwa Wildlife Projects

Muskwa Wild is a young wildlife organization from the Netherlands. Our main goal is to protect the European brown bear (Ursus arctos arctos) and its habitat in the Romanian Carpathians. To accomplish our goal it's important to work together with local communities and conservation experts from Romania. Because of habitat loss and an increase in human infra-structure development there are more conflicts between humans and key-species like brown bears and wolves.

Muskwa Wild initiates projects to prevent these conflicts and also to maintain a sustainable way of coexistence. For decades now, traditional shepherds in Romania have been herding their sheep in the ancient forests and meadows of the Carpathians. They live in relative harmony with predators but sometimes they suffer losses when they don't have sufficient resources to protect their animals. Muskwa will offer practical solutions like electrical fences and Carpathian shepherd dogs that help to limit the damage to a minimum. This way we not only protect the magnificent brown bear but we will also preserve their traditional culture.

Research is important to get annual data on bear populations and to improve understanding bear behaviour. We want to continue our research on where, why and when these conflicts occur so we can help to prevent them in the future.

Other situations where conflicts may arise:
* Confrontations at garbage sites
* Damage to beehives, orchards, crops and farm animals
* More bear encounters by nature recreationists, loggers and hunters
