Seven-spot ladybird - Coccinella 7-punctata

Ladybirds are actually species of beetles, but are considered, especially in popular literature, as a stand alone family.  Widespread and common throughout Britain and Europe. Used to be known as the gardener's friend as they eat a variety of garden pests, especcially aphids. They have even been introduced into many parts of the USA as a pest controller.

They breed in May and June, and the female can lay more than 2,000 small yellow eggs.
