Albino squirrels in Guisborough Forest

July 2010. The 360 hectare (900 acre) beauty spot on the edge of the North York Moors is home to an amazing range of wildlife, from badgers to dragonflies and adders. But few compete for rarity with a resident family of rare albino (grey) squirrels!  The white squirrels are a 1 in 100,000 oddity of nature with their stand out colour caused by a rare genetic mutation.

Albinism
In albinism the eyes are usually pink or red, and albinism affects the entire animal, not just patches. Other conditions such as leucism can effect just parts of the animal, though many people confuse leucistic animals and birds with albinos. Click here to see our gallery of albino and leucistic animals and birds.

wildlife events

The Forestry Commission and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council are staging a summer of wildlife events to mark International Year of Biodiversity.

There'll be fun sessions dedicated to forest flowers (31 July), mini-beasts (4 August), brilliant birds (11 August), mammals (18 August) and tremendous trees (25 August). Scores of hands on activities will be on offer, along with crafts and quizzes to test powers of observation!

Each event runs from 1pm to 4pm and costs £2, meeting at Guisborough Forest and Walkway Visitor Centre at Pinchinthorpe. Booking is not required. For full details call 01287 631132 or visit www.forestry.gov.uk/yorkshireandthehumber
