92 Pilot whales strand on Cape Verde Islands30/06/2010 09:19:31 Mass beaching in Cape Verde IslandsJune 2010. 92 Pilot whales have died after beaching on the shore of two of the Cape Verde Islands. 50 Pilot whales stranded on, Santiago Island, and a further 42 beached on Sal Island. Local people tried in vain to push the whales back into the sea, but the few they did manage to refloat re-stranded almost immediately. Mass stranding Reasons for mass strandings are still not known, though some people believe they are caused by military naval exercises. The last record of a mass stranding on this scale in Cape Verde was in 1947.

Actually, there have been several strandings in Cape Verde over the last few years that I know of, including approx. 260 melon-headed whales that beached on Chaves Beach in November 2007, about 40 pilot whales that beached on Boavista in November 2009, and the above stranding. Approx. 30 pilot whales just beached themselves in Feb 2011 - I am not sure how many died in this latest stranding.
