Elephant hawk moth caterpillar.

One of the most striking caterpillars, with huge false eyes which are particularly prominent when disturbed as the snout is withdrawn into the body and the head bobs from side to side to frighten predators. The caterpillar usually feeds on willows and bedstraws. Usually brown, they can occasionally be green.

One of the largest caterpillars i the UK, at as long as 8 centimetes.

It is common across much of Britain.
