Emperor dragonfly

One of Europe's largest dragonflies, the Emperor dragonfly is quite distinctive. A bright blue abdomen and large size (UK's largest dragonfly). Usually lives on well vegetated waters, but doesn't like fast flowing streams. It is a strong flyer that doesn't land often, which can make it hard to photograph. They often chase away other dragonflies and even damselflies from their patch.

Found mostly in southern England and Wales, it is now spreading northwards and can now be seen in parts of Scotland. Emerges in late spring, and cam be seen until October.
