The new act makes it an offence, at any time of the year, to take, damage or destroy the nest of the Golden eagle, the White-tailed eagle and the osprey.

The act also extends protection afforded to wild birds to birds that have been bred in captivity and lawfully released into the wild as part of a re-population or reintroduction programme, such as the Great bustards on Salisbury Plain.
