Herald moth - Scoliopteryx libatrix
The Herald moth overwinters as an adult, and is often one of the first and last species seen each year. It can be found hibernating in houses, barns or outbuildings. This image was taken in the Wildlife Extra office in December 2010 when it was -5 outside.

The Herald is fairly common and found all over Britain, but less common in Scotland.
