September 2007: Poachers killed a rhino and escaped with its horn from Kaziranga National Park(KNP); this is the 17th Rhino killed by poachers in Kaziranga this year.

The rhino was shot on near Dhoba Camp of the Agoratoli Range inside KNP in the north east Indian Assam state.

The recent floods in Kaziranga make rhinos vulnerable to poaching as they seek higher ground and move to the margins or outside the boundary of the park.

In another incident, a poacher was reportedly killed inside KNP by an adult female rhino. Gaonbura Ronfar who had previous convictions for poaching, is thought to have been killed by a rhino protecting her calf.
