Leucistic American Robin

29/07/2009 23:26:59 birds/june_2009/american_robin_leucistic

One of our readers from America, Claire Fraser from Massachusettes, saw this American Robin in her garden. It has an unusual white crown on its head which is probably caused by leucism.

Leucism (or Leukism)
Leucism is a very unusual condition whereby the pigmentation cells in an animal or bird fail to develop properly. This can result in unusual white patches appearing on the animal, or, more rarely, completely white creatures.
