Two more rhinos arrive in Uganda from Disney.30/03/2007 00:00:005 years after 2 white rhinos were re-introduced to Uganda following their extinction there in the 1980’s, 2 more white rhinos arrived by plane from America; they have been donated by the Disney corporation. Uganda used to be the only place where both Black and White rhinos could be seen in the wild, but hunting by colonial authorities and the chaos during the reign of Idi Amin led to their dieing out by 1983. These 2 new arrivals bring the number of endangered white rhinos in Uganda to 8. ‘They were very wary when they first came out of the crate and the male tried to charge which is characteristic of rhinos,’ said Patrick Atimnedi, a vet with the state-run Uganda Wildlife Authority said. The animals were released into the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, 110 miles northwest of Uganda's capital Kampala after a 4 day journey from Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida. The sanctuary is large enough to support fifty rhinos, and it is hoped that Nande and Hasani, aged 7 and 5 respectively, will settle in and breed soon.
‘It must be strange for the animals to come to Africa for the first time but I suspect they'll acclimatize quickly -- Florida is very hot and sunny too,’ said Uganda Wildlife Authority spokesman Lilian Nsubuga.
