Pigeon fanciers investigated by police for Peregrine persecution

02/02/2012 19:49:04 Police officers across UK swoop on homes of pigeon fanciers in bird of prey crime investigation

February 2012. A multiagency operation investigating alleged crimes against peregrine falcons was launched on Thursday 2 February 2012 across four police areas in England and Wales.

Police officers issued with search warrants, supported by staff from the RSPB, RSPCA, Natural England and the Countryside Council for Wales, raided the homes of four pigeon fanciers. The raids took place within the following constabulary areas: Avon and Somerset Police; South Wales Police; Northumbria Police and West Midlands Police.

A 47-year old man has been arrested by officers at one of the addresses in connection with evidence which has been seized during the operation.

Mark Thomas, an RSPB investigations officer, said: "The peregrine falcon is one of the UK's most heavily persecuted birds of prey, and we hope that today's operation will help further our investigations."

pigeon/falcons

my adopted "father" kept and raced pigeons.the cruelty among so called fanciers was rife. i saw latepigeons put into a "bingo ! tumbler, and then thrown onto railway lines. cats ( tho no fan ) shot and /or poisoned.peregrine falcons are part of nature. racing pigeons aint !ive seen some large sums of cash change hands through pigeon clubs, so i guess thats the main problem.i would rather watch a falcon anyday than a pigeon. surely rock doves as they were once called were part of the diet of peregrines. so one pigeon looks the same as any other ? unlike mankind, birds arent spiteful !just hungry.

@Stephen - racing pigeons have been bred to fly fast and they have had their instinct to dive into cover at the sight of danger bred out of them. If a hawk chases one it just flies faster home! Instead of shooting the hawks they need to breed pigeons that are able to look after themselves. Pigeons and peregrines are locked in an evolutionary arms race and the wild pigeons are able to avoid peregrine attacks most of the time. It's the captive ones that are the retards.

Five a day

As peregrine falcons will take the easyest prey I take it that your pigeons were not fit or sick so are doing you a faver in culling all the weaklings out.
