Scorpion fly

17/07/2008 12:07:49

This looks very like a Welsh Clearing moth, but is in fact one of the Scorpion Flies Panorpidae sp. There are only 3 British species, all of which are relatively common. They get their name because the terminal segments of the male abdomen is turned up like a scorpion.

Despite the name and appearance they are completely harmless and spend most of their lives crawling around hedgerows where they live on dead insects and carrion.
