‘Extinct’ South Island kokako photographed – Or was it?20/04/2011 12:41:30A possible sighting of a South Island kokako has been reported in Kahurangi National Park April 2011. A trekker who was walking in New Zealand's Kahurangi National Park is being sought by authorities and bird lovers as she may have photographed a South Island kokako. The woman that took the photo showed it to a passing backpacker on the track, saying that she didn't think it was a local bird. Functionally extinct The South Island kokako was listed as functionally extinct by the Department of Conservation in 2007. There have been several reports of sightings and reports of their distinctive call, but the last confirmed sighting on New Zealand's South Island was way back in 1967. It is believed that it hung on Stewart Island well into the 1980s (a feather was found there in 1987) but, despite extensive searches, no proof has been found there or on the mainland for many years. North Island kokako have survived and are protected.
