Leucistic Oystercatcher in Auckland15/03/2010 08:33:40
An unusual variable oystercatcher, probably leucistic, seen in Auckland. Photo credit Andrew Bogle. Variable oystercatcher displaying leucism, from Auckland. Courtesy of Andrew Bogle. Two photos of a leucistic variable oystercatcher at Point Chevalier. The photo with Auckland Harbour bridge in the background was taken on the 13th March 2010 in the late afternoon on the eastern side of Coyle Park, and the second image shows the mudflats of Point Chevalier Beach. This is almost certainly the same bird in both pics as the two sites are only a few hundred metres apart.
I had also seen this bird a few weeks ealier at yet another shore site, in Westmere, which is in the same general area of West Auckland on the upper Waitemata Harbour. The bird is always with a flock of oystercatchers and seems to be accepted by them as one of their own. Variable Oystercatchers They can appear as anything from all black to having a white front. However all white birds are not just 'very variable' but probably also have leucism or another colouration defect. I have seen today at a Forest and Bird walk an oystercacher pair one of them leucistic at the mudflats of Tolaga Bay, East Coast. That was my second sighting, the first was a white oystercatcher in captivity in Otorohanga.

Interesting to read Ray Buckmaster's note on the white Oystercatcher. My wife and I saw this same bird with a large flock of Variable Oystercatchers also in Colville Bay on 12th Dec 2010, so it has obviously been hanging around for quite a while. Must be the same bird seen round Auckland before. My wife took several good photos.

Saw a similar/same bird in company with around one hundred southern pied oystercatchers in Colville Bay on the 8th April. Have a good picture. I have heard of guilt by association, perhaps this is identification by association! I would have called mine a Southern pied oyster catcher before seeing this item. Now I must withold judgement, unless, of course the original bird is still in the original location!
