WildCare scheme boosting rare birds on UK farms24/11/2008 22:25:20WildCare field November 2008. Britain's farmers are playing a vital role in the resurgence of many threatened species of wildlife. Figures released by the wildlife habitat scheme, WildCare, show that declining species such as brown hares, yellowhammers and even the humble house sparrow are making a dramatic comeback on participating farms. The figures, which come only two years after the launch of WildCare on 60 Waitrose dairy farms, reveal that many species considered to be in decline on UK farmland have increased on participating farms. Over the past year, habitat suitable for wildlife has increased by 19% and sightings of birdlife considered to be in decline are up 47%. WildCare works with Waitrose Select Farm dairy farmers to encourage farming practices that benefit wildlife. The results, collated through two annual audits of each participating farm, show that these farmers have made a significant contribution to UK conservation. Farmers involved in the scheme leave hedgerow to grow, blossom and fruit, and to maintain wide field margins where wild flowers provide food and egg-laying areas for butterflies. Other initiatives include the introduction of ponds, ditches, beetle banks, skylark scrapes, barn own boxes, wetland and overwintered stubble.

its nice to see the increase in numbers of the humble house sparrow.i'm sure most readers would be aware that these days the use of privet in newly built houses is none existent.from my own observations of this species i would like to see the use of privet become more widespread.it offers protection from the elements and predators also providing insect life at the same time.the use of privet does increase the numbers of house sparrows even when away from agricultural land.
