Christmas is looming, but what to do? Wildlife Extra has had a look in our old presents draw, and we have selected a bunch of the best wildlife gifts for 2009.

Some are things we like, some are things we would like, but they are all things we have seen or tried, and that we would recommend.

 

Best books

Planet Ape

This is one of the best books we have seen this year, a step up from the usual "Wildlife is lovely, we must be nicer to it" sort of book.

Desmond Morris is well known for his people watching, and here he makes many comparisons between how we behave and how they do.

Life in the Wild

This book has no pretensions. It is a celebration of wildlife photographs, and I say photographs rather than photography.

The book contains some 200 stunning wildlife images and virtually nothing else.

Book we would want for Christmas

The clue is in the name, which, for once, is entirely true. This comprehensive guide to the mammals and birds of Antarctica is a must for anyone travelling to the region, and the region includes all the subantarctic islands from The Falklands to the Kerguelen Islands, via Tristan da Cunha, Prince Edward Island, Amsterdam Island, Chatham Island and the Islands to the south of New Zealand.
