And the winner is this striking image of a hare by Peter Denness

The Wildlife Extra UK Wildlife Photography Competition 2011 has been won by Peter Denness with his stunning image of a hare. We don't usually go for black and white images, but Peter's hare was just too good. We argued over the best bird shot, but the bugs, landscapes and under 16 categories were easy.

The standard of photos submitted to this years competition was fantastic - Given that our main aim is to encourage everyone to get outside and take photos, and that we offer no cash prize to the winners. We had some 2000 entrants, and we find it hugely encouraging to get so many with so little incentive.

winner of the UK wildlife photo awards  mammals - Peter Denness

Almost looks as though this hare has been dropped onto a studio canvas so good is the background. This is bold, dramatic, sharp and the expression makes it complete, truly outstanding shot of a much photographed subject.

WINNER OF THE UK WILDLIFE PHOTO AWARDs insects Bugs - AGNIESZKA DYMEK

Humorous - they inevitably are - and brilliantly conceived. The crop is bold, the contrast superb and the result is brilliant as well as comic. Does it get an initial reaction? Does it elicit a response from any viewer?

Yes on both counts, this is whey it wins.

Superb use of wide angle, the linear and gnarled invitation to the heart of the photo is brilliantly executed and the patch of light amongst the stygian gloom is superb, a worthy winner.

under 16S - Lydia Clyma, aged 13

Is it wild? I don't care. For a youngster to even see a photo like this is astonishing. Hugely imaginative crop - I don't need to see the whole horse -I see enough to know it is of the equine persuasion - but the backlighting and background is superb. Keep at it, you might just have a future in this game.
