Atuanui Scenic Reserve

The Atuanui Scenic Reserve contains 615 hectare of mature native forest reserve.  It is the largest area of native forest between the Waipoua Forest and the Waitakere Ranges. Highlights include some large Kauri, Rimu and Puriri trees as well as a dominant Taraire canopy and a rich variety of native vegetation.

Pest eradication & control
Atuanui has taken major strides towards eradicating pests, including possums, stoats, goats and deer. The Auckland Regional Council also control possums in a 1700ha buffer zone around the reserve. Unfortunately rodents are not yet controlled at Atuanui.

Deer and goats are still a problem. The Department of Conservation has contracted hunters to more regularly to help control deer. There are plans to control goats and other pests such as rodents and stoats, but this requires funding.

Atuanui Restoration Project
The Atuanui Restoration Project is a community partnership initiated by Kaipara Forest and Bird with local residents, Auckland Regional Council, the Department of Conservation, the Rodney District Council and other supporters. The goal is to establish a mainland restoration project at the Atuanui Scenic Reserve to restore the reserve to a healthy, functioning forest teeming with native flora and fauna and a melodious dawn chorus.

Wildllife highlights: Kereru, Tui, Fantail, Ruru and Tomtits can all be seen and heard at Atuanui.

Location and access: About 70 kilometres north west of Auckland on SH16.
