Tawharanui Open Sanctuary
A pest proof fence was erected around Tawharanui Open Sanctuary, which is situated on a peninsula and so relatively easy to cordon off from the mainland. Pests have mostly been eradicated from inside the sanctuary, so native bush is regenerating and attracting native species.
Pateke, North Island brown kiwi, North Island robin, whiteheads, Auckland green gecko and forest gecko have all been reintroduced since the predator proof fence was built. There are plans to reintroduce more native species to the sanctuary in the future.
Wildlife highlights: Bellbird have colonised Tawharanui and are common. Bittern, blue reef heron, spotless crake, fernbird and NZ dotterel can all be seen.
Access & Facilities: There is a visitor centre near the gate, parking facilities, walking tracks, campsites and a road through some of the sanctuary.
Location and how to get there: From Auckland, follow State Highway 1 north to Warkworth, then to Matakana. After Matakana turn right at the Omaha turn off and the park is well sign posted.
