Whirinaki Forest Park
Whirinaki Forest is sometimes called a 'dinosaur forest', as it contains many huge and ancient trees. Containing a rugged mixture of mountains, the crystal clear Whirinaki river, waterfalls, forest, bush tracks and bird life. The Forest Park stretches over 55000 ha from near Murupara in the north to the Napier-Taupo highway in the south.
Highlights: Kokako, kaka, kakariki, robins, whiteheads, bellbirds and tui.
Location: Lying south of Murupapa; The forest is accessible (via Highway 38) on a sealed road in just over an hour from Rotorua by car. No public transport is currently available to get there except for tours.
