Arethusa Lodge & Reserve - Forest and Bird

The 14 hectare Arethusa Reserve is situated on parabolic dunes, the dry and sandy perimeter of which forms the sides of a shallow basin that collects rain to form wetland areas and a shallow lake.

Since Forest & Bird acquired the land, many pohutukawa, kauri, kahikatea and other native trees have been planted, and kanuka, manuka, karo and various other native species are regenerating naturally.

Highlights:  Black swan, pied cormorant, pukeko, paradise shelduck, mallard, grey duck and spotless crake. Sacred kingfisher nest and North Island fantail, grey warbler and silvereye can all be seen.

Location and Access: Situated at Lamb Road, Pukenui, at the middle of the Aupouri Peninsula, Northland. A wide track round the wetland perimeter enables visitors to traverse the changing patterns of wetland vegetation in the dune lake system, manuka and kanuka trees.

Accommodation: Arethusa Lodge is a prime spot for watching birdlife. The lodge has six bunks, a fully equipped kitchen and a separate bathroom outside.

Contact the lodge: John Dawn manages the lodge.
