Boundary Stream Mainland Island
Boundary Stream Mainland Island contains the 702 hectare Boundary Stream Scenic Reserve as well as 100 hectares of private land. It is situated on the eastern flanks of the Maungaharuru Range, and habitats include lowland forest and montane forest. The state of Boundary Stream's forests have improved markedly since a restoration project started in 1996. Pest numbers (Pets included deer, pigs, goats, possums, rats, stoats and weasels.) have been dramatically reduced by trapping, hunting and poisoning, and birds, insects and vegetation have increased.
Wildlife Highlights: Boundary Stream Reserve contains North Island brown kiwi, kâkâ and kôkako, New Zealand falcon and kererû, as well as large populations of more common species such as tui, bellbird, whitehead and North Island robin.
Location & Access: Boundary Stream Mainland Island is about an hour's drive north from Napier on State Highway 2 to Tutira, then inland on the Pohokura Road.
There are 4 walking tracks in the reserve of varying lengths and difficulties, including an interpretation Nature Walk.
