Colin Kerr-Taylor Memorial Reserve
The cute fantail (piwakawaka) is included in Maori mythology not for its brave deeds, but for laughing at the wrong moment. The demigod Maui was attempting to kill Hine-nui-te-po, the goddess of deat,h as she lay sleeping when piwakawaka let out a loud giggle. The goddess woke up and promptly slayed Maui. There are four tracks in the reserve and walks usually take between 1-2 hours.
Location: The reserve is located at Taylor Rd, Waimauku, near Kumeu. Parking is available on the grassed area along from the reserve. Users are advised not to park in front of the kennels.
Highllights: Birds often seen in the reserve include kereru, tui, grey warbler, silvereye, fantail, morepork, kingfisher & kaka.
Dogs are banned in the reserve, as pest control is undertaken year-round.
