There are some gorgeous walks through the lush forest to copious waterfalls and wetlands. However the reason that the forest is so lush and the waterfalls so copious is that it rains a lot.
Wildlife Highlights: 28 native birds can be found here, including North Island brown kiwi, fernbird and blue duck.
Sadly, Egmont was very badly affected and predation and the destruction of healthy natural habitat were rife. Possums in particular have affected canopy tree species and bird populations.
Goats are now heavily controlled, and much of the vegetation is recovering from their heavy munching of the past. There are also some problems with invasive plants.
Egmont National Park
Egmont National Park is dominated by Mount Egmont (or Taranaki) a dormant volcano.
