Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust
Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust, a community-based charitable trust, is creating a fully-fenced pest-free wildlife sanctuary at Rotokare Scenic Reserve.
The site is a beautiful forested catchment (230ha) with a sheltered lake and fringing wetland, all within a 2m high, pest-proof fence. Rotokare is the largest fully-protected and pest-proof fenced natural wetland in the country.
Pest eradication
Wildlife and the health of the ecosystems are expected to flourish now that pests have been removed (or at very low numbers). Pest detection is continuing after what appears to be successful pest eradication work in 2008.
Wildlife highlights: Visitors will hear many common New Zealand bush birds, plus hear and see a range of wetland birds, including fernbird (Bowdleria punctata vealeae), kingfisher (Halcyon sancta vagans) and black shag (Phalacrocorax carbo novaehollandiae).
The Trust is planning to reintroduce some rare species and some species that have been lost from the reserve or region. This may include lizards as well as birds.
Location & Access: 12 km east of Eltham in South Taranaki. The public are welcome and there is no entry charge.
The Trust is active in the network of groups managing sanctuaries in New Zealand - www.SanctuariesNZ.org .
