Ohope Scenic Reserve - Kiwi
Kiwis are unique to New Zealand. They are nocturnal and flightless. There are five kinds of kiwi - three closely related Brown Kiwis, the Little Spotted Kiwi and the Great Spotted Kiwi. The kiwi’s long slender bill has nostrils at the lower end, so that it can detect worms, insects and grubs. Despite its awkward appearance, a kiwi can outrun a human. Pest control: Possum, rats and stoats are all being controlled in an effort to help the kiwi thrive. Dogs are strictly banned from the reserve.
Wildllife Highlights: As well as the North Island brown kiwi, tui, silvereye, long-tailed cuckoo, shining cuckoo, bellbird, grey warbler, North Island fantail and morepork can all be seen and/or heard. Little Blue penguins nest nearby at Otarawairere, near Whakatane.
Location: Ohope reserve can be found where the Ohope road meets the sea, just east of Whakatane.
