Puketi Forest Park

The 15,000 hectares Puketi Forest is an ancient kauri forest located in the heart of New Zealand's Northland. Introduced pests have had a dvastation effect on the wildlife of Puketi, as goats, pigs, stoats, weasels, possums and cats are all present here.

New Zealand robin, rifleman, kaka and red and yellow-crowned parakeets are no longer present. But there is still plenty here, though North Island kiwi, kukupa and pied tit are all badly effected by the alien pests and are much reduced in number. Small populations of both bat species these species remain in Puketi and require protection.

The forest is now protected as part of Northland Forest Park and is administered by the New Zealand government Department of Conservation (DOC).

Wildlife Highlights: Kokako, North Island Brown Kiwi, Kukupa (New Zealand Pigeon), Fantail, Pied Tit, Tui, Grey Warbler, Shining Cuckoo, Kingfisher, Silvereye, Blackbird, White-eye, Kiwi, Morepork.

Location & Access: Puketi Forest can be reached from Waiare Road, 1 kilometre south of Kaeo. The 16 kilomtres gravel road takes you up to the top of the ridge where Maninginangina scenic reserve is located, where there is all weather and wheel chair access.
