Taiaroa Head Royal Albatross Colony

The Taiaroa Head Royal Albatross Colony  is the only mainland breeding colony for any albatross species in the southern hemisphere. The first albatross chick fledged from Taiaroa in 1938 and now the colony has a population of around 140 birds.

These fast flying birds can have a wingspan of some 9 feet.

Highlights: Apart from the Albatrosses,  Blue penguins, Fur seals, New Zealand Sea lions, and the uncommon Stewart Island shag can be seen here, as well as a ost of other birds.

Location: The colony is on the tip of the Otago Peninsula, on New Zealand's South Island.
