Tauranga dolphin watching

Swimming with dolphins
Bay of Plenty is home to New Zealand's largest population of Common Dolphins, and it is possible, with the right conditions, to swim with the dolphins. Tauranga is also a gateway to the Bay of Plenty and Matakana Island.

Highlights: Killer whales, Humpback whales & Pilot whales, Sea turtles and New Zealand fur seals can all be seen in this area. The critically endangered New Zealand dotterel breeds in the area, and there is a succesful conservation project on Matakana Island. Blue penguins, albatross, gannets and other common sea birds are all regularly seen.

Location: Tauranga is on the western end of the Bay of Plenty
