Whakatane dolphin watching

Whakatane is one of two gateways to the wildlife of the Bay of Plenty, the other being Tauranga, 100 kilometres westwards along the coast. Both provide opportunities to see the marine wildlife of the Bay of Plenty, and, depending on the conditions, it is possible to swim with dolphins at both locations.

Highlights: Common dolphins (Bay of Plenty holds New Zealand's biggest population), Killer whales, Fin whales, Minke whales and Pilot whales can all be seen offshore from Whakatane. There are several small colonies of New Zealand Fur Seals nearby and you may also see Little Blue penguins (the world's smallest penguin) on Whale Island.

Location: Whakatane lies on the southern curve of the Bay of Plenty.
