Natural History Illustration Course

The Art of Natural History Illustration course is a five day introductory course for anyone who is interested in wildlife conservation and art.

Who is it for?

The course is designed for any one who is passionate about wildlife conservation and has an interest in drawing and painting. Do you believe that science and art are at their best when working together, informing and supporting each other? This course provides a unique combination of education and training, fun and hard-work. Participants will be inspired, enthused and challenged, learning how to see the natural world in a new way and honing their artistic skills.

What is the course content?
The course will:

  • Give you step by step guidance to allow you to develop your skills to produce stunning and detailed paintings ofthe natural world.
  • Generate new ways of thinking and develop insight into the synergy between art and science.
  • Allow you priveledged access to the animals and staff at Durrell
  • Provide an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded enthusiasts

Who will lead the course?
The course will be run by award-winning professional artists, Robert Cook and Mike Clapham and will include talks and behind the scenes tours from the experts at Durrell.

How will you benefit?
Students will be inspired and challenged in equal measure by the unique discursive and inclusive methods. Helping them to get to grips with difficult concepts and principles in ecology, evolution and nature. The artists will develop a deeper understanding of the way nature works, unlocking creative potential and insight which will radically influence their ability to interpret the world around them.

The course is designed to maximise your opportunities to go into the grounds at Durrell and observe the animals. Students will experience the delights of the dawn chorus of lemurs and howler monkeys, learning about the captive breeding programme and hearing conservation stories from around the world.

The course will be run at Durrell's headquarters inJersey.

How much will it cost?
The course fee is £600. Optional full board accommodation at our on-site residence, Les Noyers, can be arranged on request.
