Nikon Coolpix P100

photography/nikon_p100

The Nikon Coolpix P100 takes over from the P90 as Nikon's top end bridge camera. Boasting such features as a 26X optical zoom and 10.3 million pixels, it seems like the business. The Nikon has a nice feel when you first pick it up, which is an important start. The controls are a little complicated by modern standards (Speaking as someone who doesn't like to use a manual) and we couldn't find any kind of manual included on the camera.

The Nikon P100 would have been top of it's class a year ago, but we feel that it is not up to scratch when compared with the Olympus SP800-UZ.  The Olympus has a 30X optical zoom, compared with the 26X on the Nikon. The Olympus boasts 14 megapixels vs 10.3 on the Nikon, and the Olympus has a vast 2 gigabyte in built memory vs just 43MB in the Nikon. The Nikon does have some advantages; it handles better, has an option of an viewfinder or a 3 inch screen (The Olympus has no viewfinder, just a 3 inch screen.). Both have a macro setting, but the Olympus has a super macro as well - However the Nikon macro seems to be able to do anything that the Olympus super macro can do.

As a little test, we took the same images with each camera (see below), from 20 and 50 yards.

The Nikon P100 is generally available online for around £240-280, compared with £230 for the Olympus SP800-UZ.
