Bird Sense
What is it like to be a bird? - Written by Tim Birkhead
Bird sense tries to get under the feathers of the birds, to provide a birds-eye view as to what it is like to be a bird. How do some birds fly so fasts, sleep on the wing, navigate thousands of kilometres and return to the same nest, find water in the desert or find worms buried in mud? Birkhead explains what senses are used to achieve all of these, and many more.
I particularly enjoyed the account of early experiments on bird navigation - Basically taking Manx shearwaters from Skokholm to various parts of the UK and further afield, and studying how quickly they returned to their burrows - They were amazed!
Tim Birkhead is a professor at the University of Sheffield and a fellow of the Royal Society of London.
