Bradt Amazon Highlights
Written by Roger HarrisThe Amazon covers many countries, and this book details Amazonia in Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador; realistically the only bits that most people are likely to visit.
Visiting the Amazon proper is quite a different prospect to travel in the rest of South America. You really do need to work out why you are visiting, and target that particular reason. Wildlife? (About 1/2 the book is dedicated to the wildlife of the Amazon, and where and how to see it). What sort: Birds, dolphins, butterflies, monkeys or snakes? Each will have its own best time and place, though you may see any of them at any time.
Practically speaking, you will need to book with a tour operator to visit the Amazon - Fly drive hasn't caught on here yet. Bradt does recommend some, but more importantly, they tell you what to look for in a good and reliable tour operator, which is something that you really do need.
This is not a guide to cheap hotels and cafes, and nothing else. Bradt have been wise in that you should read this book before you go, before you book even, to see what and where the options are, but this is also a book you should take with you to read while you are there, a travel companion.
Recommended for ..... The more adventurous.
