Britain's Dragonflies - 2nd edition
A fieldguide to the damselflies and dragonflies of Britain and Ireland - 2nd edition.
By Dave Smallshire & Andy Swash - Published by Wildguides
There are some good guides to the insects of the Britain, but if you want to have a more detailed insight into the dragonflies of the UK, this is by far the best book. There are a remarkable 5,500 species known worldwide today, but only about 40 currently breed in the UK. This isn't just an ID book enabling you to tell one species from another, but also gives great details of the lifecycles, habits, locations and population and conservation status, of all the UK's damselflies and dragonflies. There are also details of potential vagrants and former breeding species.
Damselfly and Dragonfly ID
However the real meat of the book is to allow you to work out which species is which. If you, like me, struggle to work out whether it was a common blue or azure damselfly, this guide is invaluable. The detail of each and every abdomen, as well as many heads and thorax, make this a great deal easier. Additionally all the various larvae are pictured to enable you to identify them.
An invaluable book for any one interested in these beautiful beasts.
