Butterflies of Britain and Europe: A Photographic Guide

reviews/reviews_2010/butterflies_of_europe

Written by Hannu Aarnio, Kimmo Saarinen, Pekka Ojalainen, Tari Haahtela

Nine per cent of European butterflies are threatened with extinction, while a third of some 482 European butterfly species have experienced a decline in their population.  This guide covers 440 species, including a few vagrants, found across Europe. Each species has 2 or more images (Authors are specialists in macro photography), details of habits, habitats, flying periods and, crucially, a map. There are no caterpillar or egg images for each species though, just a brief description for each family. There is also of the butterflies of European Islands, Eastrern Europe and adjacent regions.

Good photos and maps make this book easy to use, you will struggle with caterpillar ID though.

Published May 2011.
