Canals of Britain- A comprehensive guide
Written by Stuart FisherPublished by Adlard Coles Nautical
In Britain, the golden age of the canals has long since past, though they are now making somewhat of a comeback, especially, curiously, in inner cities as developers realise what an asset a watery view can be. Canals are magnets for wildlife, hundreds of miles of very slow flowing water, often in places where you would never find such a habitat. Half way up hill sides, in the middle of London and burrowing underneath the countryside.
Dragonflies, bats, water birds, water voles, fish and many others have all benefitted from the canal age, and possibly even more so from the railways superseding the canals, leaving miles and miles of ideal habitat unused, with just a few shopping trolleys to contend with.
60 canals are covered in detail, especially with maps, history and photos, all the well known canals plus several lesser known ones, such as the Crinan canal and the Tennant canal.
