Otter
Published by Reaktion BooksBy Daniel Allen
There are thought to be 13 species of otter worldwide, and every single one of them are on the IUCN redlist. This book is as much a cultural investigation and history as a guide to otters and their habits. Otters were nearly hunted to extinction in the UK, but are highly revered in some cultures in some places North America and in parts of Asia they were trained to help fishermen.
Otters have featured in art and literature for many centuries, though sadly in the UK they featured heavily in artworks about hunting. However, thankfully, they are now much better known as an iconic species thanks to their appearance in popular literature, and they also tend to make headlines when there is an ecological disaster such as the Exxon Valdes.
