Primates of West Africa

reviews/reviews_2010/primates_west_africa A field guide and natural history - Written by John Oates
Illustrated by Stephen Nash
Part of the Conservation International tropical field guide series

West Africa contains 60 different primate species, 46 of which occur nowhere else. The savannas and dry woodland in the north change into the lush Guinea Forest further south, or what is left of it. 30 species are considered endangered and 1, Miss Waldron's red colobus, is probably already extinct - Though occasional reports occur from the border of Ghana and Ivory Coast.

In general, savannah species still roam widely, but forest species are often endangered due the destruction of their habitat and as they are targeted for Bushmeat.

Most comprehensive
With just 60 species covered in more than 500 pages, this is just about the most comprehensive field guide I have ever seen! With so much space, many different aspects are covered, and we particularly like "Best place to see a species". There are maps and photos too, and a comprehensive introduction to the region and its extremely varied habitats.
