Remembird; a digital audio recorder designed by birders, but also good for safaris.

Problems

Not many, none serious at all.
With very cold hands/gloves, the controls are a bit awkward.
The indicator light can be difficult to see in bright daylight.

The hardware
Remembird has been designed for dedicated birders by dedicated birders. Very much a lightweight, field recorder, a great deal of thought has gone into the design and usage of this product. It is very lightweight, easy to use and the accompanying software is simple and intuitive, though the set up is a little fiddly.

The Remembird can record over surprising distances (owls at night from 4-600 yards) though obviously works best at close quarters, and it is a little sensitive to ambient noise so you and the trees have to stay still while recording. It fits snugly onto most binoculars (see guidelines) and is designed to cope with some rough treatment.

The software. Downloading your recordings is very simple, and the software instantly drops them into a diary so you know when the recording was made. You can file your recordings by date and time or by where they were made for easy reference. There is a very simple play back mode or an easy to delete mode for all those clips of trees rustling, kids shouting and planes going over head.

The cost
They don’t give it away, but nor should they. £195 covers the hardware and software, and you can also buy memory cards with the bird sounds of Britain, Europe, North America, and Trinidad and Tobago for £40-75 each. If you are serious about your birding, it's a good investment.

Great on safari too.
Designed 100% for birders, it would also be fantastic on safari, especially at night, for listening to the sounds of the bush. Elephants rumbles, bush baby shrieks and leopard coughs would all come through beautifully.
