Tiger, Lord of the Jungle

reviews/lord_of_the_jungle_tiger

By Alain Pons & Francois Moutou.

This is a no holds barred, all you need to know about tigers. There is plenty of fine photography of tigers in their natural habitats, from steamy jungle to the frozen taiga via high altitude in the Himalaya, but there is also a sad reflection on man's continuing persecution and treatment of this great cat.

Tigers in the wild are magnificent, tigers in captivity is a crying shame, tigers in farms is beyond disgusting. From the more innocent days of the 'great tiger hunts' of the Raj, via the damage that can be done by so-called eco-tourism to to the unspeakable persecution for profit of today's poachers, most of the news is bad.

Tigers in captivity
This covers a broad spectrum. Who can argue with very carefully managed preservation of a species in captivity to save it from extinction? Who can defend tiger farms? And there is a long list of revolting practices involving captive tigers:

  • White tigers (All white tigers in captivity are descended from 1 white male tiger and 1 of his daughters.).
  • Tigers in 'private collections'
  • Tigers in circuses
  • Tiger cubs used for tourists photos
  • Breeding tigers with lions
Francois Moutou and Alain Pons
Moutou is a veterinary surgeon, a mammologist, a member of several IUCN specialist groups and co-author of 'Mammals of Europe'.  Pons is a renowned wildlife photographer who has been published in BBC Wildlife & National Geographic amongst others.
