The Urban Birder
David Lindo
The clue is in the name of the book. David Lindo is the self styled ‘Urban Birder’ and specialises in birding in towns and cities, and especially in London. The book covers the story of how David Lindo's fascination with birds grew as he did, and how he satisfied his urge to seek out those birds. Living in London for most of his life meant he had to find the best places within reach, and within London, to watch the birds, and he reveals many of those best places. This is a great book for anyone interested in birds, but also as a story of ao young lad growing up in sometimes difficult times, following a passion and, eventually, making a living from it.
Wormwoods Scubs
David’s favourite place – by far – is ‘The Scrubs’ in West London. At first, an unlikely seeming place for a birder (though he did spot the Oddie there once), but it has become well known amongst London birders as a top spot, with more than 100 species recorded including Red kites, short eared owls, Ring ouzel and many common common breeding thrushes, finches and warblers as well as more unusual species such as Linnets, Pied flycatchers, Common redstart, Sedge and Reed warblers, blackcaps and whitethroats. More about Wormwood Scrubs.
“To gain more knowledge, and to see the birds I had always dreamed about, meant that I had to get myself out of London on a frequent basis. I was 18 and working in Neasden Tax Office, in a job that quite frankly bored me to death and beyond.” We can all sympathise there.
