Tay Estuary dolphins

Dolphins have started to appear regularly in the Tay River Estuary in the last few years. One theory is that effluent that used to be pumped into the Tay River is now treated by a new sewage works that was opened in 2001. Consequently the water of the Tay River is now much cleaner, and thus much more attractive to dolphins and other wildlife.

The dolphins are best seen either from one of the dolphin watch boats, or from the front, harbour or castle at Broughty Ferry.

Dolphins at Broughty: It is thought that these dolphins are, or were, part of the Inverness Bottlenose dolphin population that have expanded their range due to the cleaner waters of the Tay.

Location: Broughty Ferry lies just east of Dundee and is well connected by road and rail.
